The brown you get on old manuscripts is the colour the inks went after several hundred years. I think that it is most likely that it was originally black. Although in Cambridge University Library I once found a manuscript from the late 18th century where someone was testing new inks, in a variety of colours. He helpfully wrote down what colour each one was, which was good as by the time I was looking at them there was very little difference, and they were all brown. So while brown ink is lovely, and indeed one of my favourites, 17th and 18th century note-takers probably didn't use brown, but black. Ink at that time was made of a variety of things, including soot or oak galls and iron sulphate. Red inks were also used occasionally, and these seem to keep their colour much better.Usually Angryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03706316021802278810noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1304925401727358614.post-17888398451206443212012-02-12T20:55:43.078+00:002012-02-12T20:55:43.078+00:00I have a horrible feeling that I may have started ...I have a horrible feeling that I may have started another quest for the "perfect" brown ink, even though I know for a fact that no such beast exists. That Noodler's Brown ink is very nice indeed (thanks Matthias!) but now I have found out that Noodler's ink is no longer exported to the UK, I don't want to like it too much in case I can't get any more. Havana Brown has a lot of fans, and there's lots of brown inks I'd like to try out such as Herbin and Private Reserve Chocolat which is beautiful. Another one to try out, even though it costs more per ml than gold, is Caran d'Ache Grand Canyon. I have a bottle of CdA Sunset, which is one of my favourite inks of all.Stationery Traffichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04902044031883111940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1304925401727358614.post-21054690764577201982012-01-18T15:04:31.532+00:002012-01-18T15:04:31.532+00:00I haven't tried Pelikan brown. I have a sample of FPN Galileo Brown which is also a Noodler's ink and is the next one to try out. I am not bothered by the lack of water resistance, as I work in a dry (well, most of the time) office.Stationery Traffichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04902044031883111940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1304925401727358614.post-31598878918660929372012-01-13T13:56:30.396+00:002012-01-13T13:56:30.396+00:00Pelikan's brown is very nice and fresh. The fountain pen in my shirt is filled with Noodler's Brown #41 for many months now. It is not a nice brown, vertainly not as nice as the Pelikan Brown, but it is waterproof and more. If you like I'll send you a sample.Matthiashttp://bleistift.memm.denoreply@blogger.com
